Την Πέμπτη που μας πέρασε, μετά από δωδεκάμηνη μάχη κόντρα στη λευχαιμία, πέθανε στα 72της χρόνια, σε ένα νοσοκομείο του Connecticut, η Mary Travers, η τραγουδίστρια του φολκ συγκροτήματος Peter, Paul and Mary, που χρησιμοποιούσαν όμορφες και ήρεμες αρμονίες για να μεταδώσουν την οργή των ανθρώπων που κινητοποιούνταν εναντίον της αμερικάνικης πολιτικο-στρατιωτικής ανάμιξης στο Βιετνάμ, εναντίον των φυλετικών διακρίσεων και του ρατσισμού, εναντίον της εκμετάλλευσης των εργατών από τους εργοδότες.
Στην Ελλάδα της δεκαετίας του ’60 το τραγούδι “If I Had a Hammer” ακουγόταν ως επί το πλείστον στα εφηβικά πάρτι αλλά και στις ελληνικές ταινίες σε σκηνές χορού με την Κατερίνα Γώγου και τον Αλέκο Τζανετάκο. To “If I Had a Hammer” (The Hammer Song) γράφτηκε το 1949 από τον Pete Seeger και τον Lee Hays που ήθελαν έτσι να υποστηρίξουν το προοδευτικό κίνημα των ΗΠΑ σε μια εποχή δύσκολη με τον Ψυχρό Πόλεμο να συνθλίβει τις αντιστάσεις των κινημάτων.
Η πρώτη ηχογράφησή του έγινε με το φολκ συγκρότημα The Weavers (Seeger, Hays, Ronnie Gilbert and Fred Hellerman) και με τους Peter, Paul and Mary. Σήμερα, 60 χρόνια μετά την πρώτη εκτέλεσή του το “If I Had a Hammer” είναι πάντα επίκαιρο και συνοδεύει όχι μόνο τα πάρτι μας αλλά και τους αγώνες μας.
